Colonoscopy with easy  Preparation 

Longan Medical offers a novel ability (patented) that enables colonoscopy with easy preparation.

Instead of the regular difficult preparation for a colonoscopy, Longan enables performing the colonoscopy without significant prior preparation on the part of the subject.

What is Colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is an examination of the entire colon, from the anus to the cecum. The purpose of the procedure is to discover and potentially treat colorectal cancer. More than 40 million colonoscopies are performed each year around the world, more than 15M of which are in the US.

The Clinical Need

One of the more unpleasant and difficult components of the colonoscopy examination is the preparation. Preparation is usually done at home, and it can be quite challenging. It requires a special diet and the intake of laxatives for cleansing. The preparation can incapacitate the patient for a few days prior to the procedure.  Most people who have had a colonoscopy would agree that the preparation is the worst part, since during the colonoscopy itself patients are sedated, and they do not feel any pain or even remember the procedure all together.

The Longan Solution

A soft sleeve enables the inflow of water directly to the depth of the colon so that cleansing is performed from the cecum toward the anus in the natural direction of flow, enabling:

  • Efficient cleansing of the colon. Recent study shows more than 90% success rate, which are at least good as the traditional preparation methods.

  • A screening colonoscopy based on introducing a capsule with a camera that can be performed as part of the procedure may save more than 60% of the traditional colonoscopies without sedation and reduced perforation risk with a significant less cost.  If lesions are found, a colonoscope is inserted to complete a regular colonoscopy.

This is a video of a colonoscopy performed with the Longan screening device, the camera was a PillCam supplied by given Imaging (the white near the upper edge of the picture is the edge of the sleeve) In this accelerated video it can be seen that the surface of the colon is clean which is an indication that the cleaning process was successful. Furthermore,

 observation of the surface gives the gastroenterologist sufficient data to decide if a pathology exists if no pathology exists as in this case then the patient is free to leave immediately after the examination. if on the other hand a pathology is found a traditional colonoscopy perhaps accompanied by a biopsy may be carried out immediately since all preparation has already been completed.
